Lincoln Center and Subway Cinema to Present Korean Film Retrospective in New York

Restorations of MEMORIES OR MURDER, NOWHERE TO HIDE, SAVE THE GREEN PLANET in NY

‘Relentless Invention: New Korean Cinema, 1996–2003’, a new program being jointly staged by Film at Lincoln Center and Subway Cinema, in association with the Korean Cultural Center New York, will present a broad array of Korean classics to viewers in New York from November 22 to December 4 this year.

The program, which includes seven new 4K restorations, will shine a light on the dynamic modern age of the Korean film industry. From arthouse favorites to genre-bending commercial works, the retrospective will present a total of 21 modern Korean works to New York audiences.

The series will feature a number of new 4K restorations of Korean films, including SONG Neung-han’s gangster drama No. 3 (1997), LEE Myung-se’s action-thriller Nowhere To Hide (1999), RYOO Seung-wan’s action film Die Bad (2000), KWAK Jae-yong’s romantic comedy My Sassy Girl (2001), BONG Joon-ho’s serial killer thriller Memories of Murder (2003), PARK Chan-wook’s revenge thriller Old Boy (2003) and JANG Joon-hwan’s sci-fi-comedy Save the Green Planet (2003).

Also included are more works by Korean genre masters, such as BONG’s Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000) and PARK’s Joint Security Area /JSA (2000) and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002), as well as KIM Jee-woon’s The Quiet Family (1998) and The Foul King (2000). Arthouse classics such as Hong Sangsoo’s The Day a Pig Fell into a Well (1996) and JEONG Jae-eun’s Take Care of My Cat (2001) will take their place alongside standout melodramas like HUR Jin-ho’s Christmas in August (1998) and LEE Jeong-hyang’s Art Museum By The Zoo (1998). Period features will also be on show with KANG Je-gyu’s The Gingko Bed (1996) and E J-yong’s Untold Scandal (2003), as well as KIM Sang-jin’s anarchic action-comedy Attack The Gas Station!(1999), PARK Jong-won’s thriller Rainbow Trout (1999) and JANG Sun-woo’s gonzo blockbuster Resurrection of the Little Match Girl (2002).
