The Berlin File directed by RYOO Seung-wan attracted 130,000 audience members in seven hours following its release. According to a representative of CJ Entertainment, the investor and distributor, The Berlin File started screening at theaters at 5 p.m. on January 29th, 1 day before January 30th, its official release date, and it gathered 130,000 viewers in seven hours. This is the best score ever, even beating 151,486 set by The Host in 2006. The Berlin File started screening at 631 screens one day before its official release.

The Berlin File also set a new record with its booking share. According to Max Movie, a film booking web site, The Berlin File took 60% of bookings on January 30th, which is the highest recorded this year. By virtue of this, the film topped the box office by selling 270,835 tickets on its first day (data given by KOBIS run by KOFIC).

A representative of CJ Entertainment gave a comment saying, “The Berlin File has had the best opening of any film released in January or February so far. Considering the high booking share, and people

's expectations, it will continue to sell well.”

The Berlin File also received favorable comments from a number of directors. BONG Joon-ho of Snowpiercer said, “RYOO Seung-wan has reached an even higher level with The Berlin File. I definitely think he is the best action master in Asia now.” CHOI Dong-hoon of The Thieves highly praised the film by saying, “A tear jerker on top of marvelous action! This is what a real film is about.” LEE Joon-ik of King And The Clown also left a favorable comment saying, “The film is full of never resting powerful drama and the stylish action of RYOO Seung-wan.”
