Marvel Blockbuster Reaches 8th Pace in All-Time Rankings
Following two weeks of unprecedented blockbuster mania, courtesy of Marvel’s epic finale Avengers: Endgame, the box office has receded to normal spring levels, with 1.95 million tickets sold over the last frame. The local industry also found its way back into the mix, clinching 43% of sales over the weekend.
Following last week’s strong hold, demand has finally dropped off for Avengers: Endgame, which slowed 65% to register 813,000 sales (USD 6.34 million), which was still good enough to make off with a third straight first place ranking on the charts. To date, the tentpole has welcomed 12.8 million visitors (USD 94.38 million), which puts it at number eight on the all-time charts, just behind Miracle in Cell No.7 (2013).
Debuting in second place was CJ Entertainment‘s buddy cop comedy Miss & Mrs. Cops. The film had a reasonably good start with 511,000 entries (USD 3.81 million) and has amassed 592,000 admissions (USD 4.37 million) over its first four days.
With a good 38% hold, local comedy-drama Inseparable Bros added 258,000 viewers (USD 1.87 million) to bring its total ticket haul to a healthy 1.28 million (USD 8.88 million) to date.
Despite posting strong debuts in several markets, the video game adaptation Pokemon Detective Pikachu struggled in its Korean debut, filling just 239,000 seats (USD 1.71 million) over the weekend and reaching 454,000 admissions (USD 3.21 million) since its Wednesday debut.
Treasure Island Adventure dropped down to fifth place, collecting 49,000 viewers (USD 326,000) for a running total of 721,000 entries (USD 4.68 million).
This week, dueling Korean titles will attempt to take the weekend crown away from Avengers. Those are the action-thriller The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil, which screens in Cannes this month, and the legal drama Juror 8.
