Local Horror THE WHISPERING Opens on Friday the 13th

Hollywood remained the top draw at the Korean box office as Marvel held steady in first place and global star Dwayne Johnson entered the fray with a new action title. US films accounted for 69% of sales, with admissions down under 20% week-on-week to 2.32 million.

Repeating at the top spot after a 44% slide was Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp. With another 1.06 million viewers (USD 8.38 million) the film has reached an impressive total of 4.38 million spectators (USD 34.12 million) to date. This puts the sequel well over its predecessor’s 2.85 million ticket tally.

Opening in second place was the disaster film Skyscraper with Dwayne Johnson. The film debuted with a respectable 465,000 entries (USD 3.68 million) over the weekend and 616,000 sales (USD 4.77 million) over five days. Johnson’s fame has been growing in Korea, with his recent action titles Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Rampage reaching 1.7 and 1.3 million admissions in the market, respectively.

Down a spot but slowing only 14% was local mystery-action hit The Witch : Part 1. The Subversion. With another 387,000 viewers (USD 3.05 million), the PARK Hoon-jung title has now reached 2.48 million spectators (USD 18.82 million).

Debuting in fourth place was new local horror offering The Whispering, which unusually opened on a Friday, to benefit from the calendar date, Friday the 13th. The chiller has accrued 164,000 admissions (USD 1.29 million) to date.

Crashing 65% in its second weekend was LEE Joon-ik’s youth title Sunset in My Hometown. With 64,000 entries (USD 481,000) over the weekend and 438,000 sales (USD 3.22 million), the film has failed to connect with audiences this summer.

Disney is poised to score yet another first place finish as their Pixar title The Incredibles 2 is tipped to punch its way to first place this weekend.
