SPACE SWEEPERS Confirms Netflix Launch

Space-Set Blockbuster with SONG Joong-ki and KIM Tae-ri to Debut Online

Following rumors that surfaced in October, Netflix has confirmed that it will launch SPACE SWEEPERS globally on its streaming service. From director JO Sung-hee, the film has drawn attention for being Korea’s first ever space-set blockbuster. It stars SONG Joong-ki and KIM Tae-ri.

The film was originally scheduled for release in theaters in summer and later in the Chuseok holidays, but both dates were abandoned owing to fears of a depressed theatrical market during the pandemic. Rather than postpone the film’s release date indefinitely, investor Merry Christmas, which would have distributed the film, opted to launch the film online instead. SPACE SWEEPERS is the year’s most expensive project, costing KRW 24 billion (USD 21.5 million).

The film is set in 2092 and focuses on a clean-up crew out in space that tries to sell a weapon of mass destruction. The members of the crew include pilot SONG Joong-ki (The Battleship Island, 2017), captain KIM Tae-ri (The Handmaiden, 2016), sidekick JIN Seon-kyu (THE OUTLAWS, 2017), and YOO Hae-jin (LUCK-KEY, 2016) voicing the crew’s trusty robot. Director JO and star SONG collaborated before on the 2012 fantasy romance hit A Werewolf Boy.

This is the third major Korean film to scrap a theatrical release plan and go straight to Netflix. Time to Hunt, one of the early COVID-19 casualties, was the first to pivot earlier this year, and it was joined by the new thriller CALL, which bowed online on Friday last week.

Netflix has yet to announce a release date for the film.
