AMPAS Invites 14 New Korean Members

LEE Chang-dong, Hong Sangsoo, BAE Doo-na and HA Jung-woo among new Academy Voters



Last month, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) welcomed its new members for 2018, which included a record 14 professionals from the Korean film industry, including an array of directors, actors, and below-the-line talents.

Among the most prominent Korean names added to the rolls this year were filmmakers LEE Chang-dong, whose most recent work BURNING set the Cannes Film Festival on fire in May, and prolific auteur Hong Sangsoo, who released two films in 2017, including On the Beach at Night Alone and The Day After, also recently Claire’s Camera. Also on the list was short filmmaker JEONG Da-hee, known for her acclaimed animated shorts Man on the Chair (2014) and The Empty (2016).

Korean invited by the academy include global star BAE Doo-na, recently seen in disaster drama Tunnel (2016) and the Wachowskis’ works Cloud Atlas and Netflix show Sense8, as well as a trifecta of performers from PARK Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden (2016) - HA Jung-woo (Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds, 2017), KIM Min-hee (Grass) and CHO Jin-woong (Believer).

Two writers from Korea were also invited: PARK Chan-wook’s frequent collaborator CHUNG Seo-kyung, who most recently penned LEE Hae-young’s Drug War remake Believer, and PARK Hoon-jung, who these days is most well-known as the director of gangster drama New World (2013) and currently in-theaters mystery-action The Witch : Part 1. The Subversion.

The list also includes veteran producer OH Jung-wan, known for important works by KIM Jee-woon (A Tale of Two Sisters, 2003), E J-yong (Untold Scandal, 2003), IM Sang-soo (Tears, 2001) and LEE Yoon-ki (My Dear Enemy, 2008) among others, legendary production designer RYU Seong-hee, who designed the sets of many PARK Chan-wook and BONG Joon-ho films, composer LEE Byung-woo (The Host, 2006), as well as longtime costume designer CHO Sang-gyeong and sound designer KIM Suk-won, who were both also involved in The Handmaiden.
