Netflix Looks to Enter Korean Drama World with LOVE ALARM

Online Giant Partners with Hidden Square on Webtoon Adaptation

Netflix will take its first step in Korean original drama content with webtoon adaptation Love Alarm. News broke last week that producer LEE Jae-moon, behind the hit TV shows Misaeng and Signal, has entered into a partnership with the online streaming giant to deliver an adaptation of the CHON Kye-young series to be launched at some point in 2018.

The story follows a developer who creates an application that lets users know if someone within a ten meter radius of them is interested in them.

In a statement, LEE said that “We want Love Alarm, the TV series, to exhibit the liveliness and expression of emotions, with visual treatments that will reflect Ms. Chon's vision when she created the story.”

“It is an honor for Netflix to collaborate with a great storyteller like Ms. Chon and a visionary producer like Mr. Lee for our very first Korean original production. Working together, we look forward to transforming this wildly imaginative story into a top-quality drama series for over 86 million Netflix members around the world,” said Erik Barmack, Netflix’s vice president of international originals.

CHON has been active for two decades and is one of Korea’s most popular graphic novelists, with credits which include Unplugged Boy, Audition, Girl in Heels and Beautiful Man.

LEE has partnered with Netflix through the outfit Hidden Square and will deliver 12 episodes based on the webcomic.
