Korean Distrib Picks Up Poet Bio DONGJU, Animation KAI

Korean foreign sales agent M-Line Distribution has added a pair of new titles to its slate from directors LEE Joon-ik and LEE Sung-gang. At the same time, the outfit locked a Japanese distribution deal for its family comedy Wonderful Nightmare.

Following hot on the heels of his hit period drama The Throne, the Korean representative for the foreign language category at next year’s Academy Awards, LEE Joon-ik will present DONGJU; The Portrait of A Poet. The film features rising star KANG Ha-neul as the poet YUN Dong-ju, who rose up against Japanese oppressors during the Colonial Era. The film also stars PARK Jung-min and is currently in post-production.

M-Line also acquired Kai, an animation from LEE Sung-gang, who previously made the important Korean animated works My Beautiful Girl, Mari (2002) and Yobi, The Five-Tailed Fox (2007). Kai was produced by noted animation director YEON Sang-ho (The King of Pigs, 2011; The Fake, 2013).

From director KANG Hyo-jin (Dirty Blood, 2012), Wonderful Nightmare, which features stars UHM Jeong-hwa and SONG Seung-heon, was picked for distribution by Klockworx in Japan. The film features UHM as a high-powered lawyer who dies by accident and is temporarily returned to earth as a housewife with two children. The title previously sold to companies in North America and Asia during the Cannes Film Market.

During the recent American Film Market, M-Line also presented KIM Dong-myung’s indie drama The Liar with KIM Kkob-bi, which debuted at the Busan International Film Festival last year and recently screened at the AFI Fest in Los Angeles.
