The Korean animation Chun Taeil brings the personal story of its namesake protagonist, the famed political martyr and enduring symbol for the labor struggles of the working class, to the screen. Yet, rather than focus solely on the action he is famous for, when the activist lit himself on fire to draw attention to the horrific working conditions of laborers of the day in 1970, this new film seeks to paint a personal portrait of the social symbol, offering us a window into who he was and why he became the figure he is known as today. The film depicts Chun Taeil as a youth who helped other struggling workers in factories and was unable to ignore the realities of the working conditions around him as a tailor in the Pyeonghwa Market who eventually stood up to defend the Labor Standards Act.

Chun Taeil had its world premiere in October of this year in the Korean Cinema Today-Panorama section of the Busan International Film Festival. The film was produced by the renowned production company Myung Films, the outfit famous for delivering some of the modern classics that helped to establish Korea as a global powerhouse filmmaking country, including Park Chanwook's Joint Security Area/JSA (2000), Yim Soonrye’s Waikiki Brothers (2001), and Im Sangsoo’s A Good Lawyer’s Wife (2003).
