JEON Go-woon, born in 1985, first graduated from the film school of Konkuk University before studying filmmaking at the Korea National University of Arts (K’ARTS). She made her directing debut in 2008 with a short titled <Too Bitter to Love>, which received the First Prize at the Asian Short Film & Video Competition of the 11th Seoul International Women’s Film Festival. At K’ARTS, she ended up participating in the script and the production of <Sunshine Boys> (2012), a project from her classmate KIM Tae-gon. This successful association of several K’ARTS students motivated KIM and JEON to create KwangHwaMoon Cinema, an independent collective of filmmakers aimed at helping each other debut in the industry. This group went on to be well known on the festival circuit for the consistent quality of its productions. As the co-president of the group, JEON held various roles behind the camera, most notably producing and co-writing <The King of Jokgu> (2013) and <The Queen of Crime> (2016). She also followed KwangHwaMoon Cinema’s members in their first mainstream productions, serving as script editor for KWON Oh-kwang’s <Collective Invention> (2015) and KIM’s <Familyhood> (2016). Her first feature film, <Microhabitat> (2017) was met with critical acclaim and had a long festival run, after being first presented at the Busan International Film Festival. For this film, she received three new director awards, from the Grand Bell Awards, the Blue Dragon Film Awards and the Korean Association of Film Critics, Best Director at the Wildflower Film Awards, as well as the Tiger Uncaged for Best Feature at the New York Asian Film Festival.Less
