Lee Sang-woo received the Bronze prize from the KOFIC screenplay competition for his first feature script Jamie And Marine and graduated from UC Berkeley, majoring in film. His first feature Tropical Manila (2008) was invited to the International Film Festival Rotterdam and his second feature Mother Is A Whore (2009) gained attention at the Hong Kong International Film Festival. He followed that with its thematic sequel Father Is a Dog in 2010 before making the illegal adoption drama Barbie in 2011, which was invited to many festivals. 2012 saw him reveal Fire in Hell at the Jeonju International Film Festival to which he would return to a year later to make Exit, a contribution to JIFF’s commissioned short omnibus Short! Short! Short! 2013. For the third year running, LEE attended Jeonju in 2014 with the North Korean drama Dear Dictator, which later screened at the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival. That same year he completed work on I Am Trash, capping off his thematic trilogy begun with Mother Is a Whore, which screened at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. 2015 yielded yet another invitation to Jeonju with the youth drama <Speed>, his most expensive film to date, while he also finished two smaller works, <Dirty Romance> and <Land of the Morning Calm>. He has consistently shed light on the dark side of Korean society. Director LEE received his fifth consecutive invitation to Jeonju with his next work <Bittersweet Brew>.
