JEON Soo-il devotes himself to independent filmmaking, primarily in the city of Busan, while the mainstream of Korea’s cinema industry is concentrated in Seoul. Known for his serious approach to his film subjects and easy flowing visuals, JEON has frequently been invited to many of the major international film festivals. Starting with his feature debut film, <Wind Echoing in My Being> (1997), which was invited to the Cannes Film Festival, all of JEON’s films have toured major international film festivals, some of which were received with fanfare abroad even before they were released in Korea. Perhaps due to his experience studying filmmaking in Paris, he is one of Korea’s most popular directors in France. He has shown two films in Korean Cinema Today-Vision section during the last two years, <I Came from Busan> from 2010, which depicted the wandering of a young girl with an unwanted pregnancy, and <Pink> from 2011, which is a story of two women guarding a tavern at a declining port. He featured yet a new work at Busan in 2012 called <El Condor Pasa>, which was one of the festival’s select gala presentations, about a priest and a young woman’s coming to terms with the brutal murder of a young girl. For his next work, JEON returned to France to make <A Korean in Paris> (2015), starring CHO Jae-hyun as a man who travels to Europe in search of a missing girl and based on a similar true-life case of a man who searches for his wife during their honeymoon in Paris.Less
