SON Byong-ho, born in 1962, graduated in dramatics from Seoul Art College (now Seoul Institute of the Arts) before making his debut on stage in 1982, in a Japan-Korea production of <A Midsummer Night’s Dream>. In 1989, he joined Mokhwa Repertory Company, considered as the most prestigious troupes in Korea, where he would receive the training of legendary playwright and director OH Tae-seok. His career took off in 1996 with his performance as the lead in musical <Blue Saigon>, about the role of the Korean Army in the Vietnam War, for which he was awarded Best Actor at the Seoul Theatre Festival. He later founded in 2000 his own troupe, ZIZ Repertory Company, with which he staged several plays like <Canigula.com> and <Sphynx>. Aside from a minor role in <In The Handful Of Time> (1993), his first screen role was in PARK CHul-soo’s <Sado Sade Impotence> (1994). After appearances in SONG Il-gon’s short <The Picnic> (1999), which was in competition in Cannes, and blockbuster action <Phantom The Submarine> (1999), he was noticed by the public for his portrayal of a cruel gangster in <Failan> (2001) and his unsympathetic brother of the female protagonist in LEE Chang-dong’s <Oasis> (2002). He later chilled the blood of many a viewer with his glaring eyes while playing the Chief Officer of the Presidential Security in <The President’s Barber> (2004). SON went back to the Vietnam War with the mystery war horror <R-Point> (2005), before working on <Going By The Book> (2007) with director JANG Jin and actor JUNG Jae-young, both of which he knew from his early years in theatre. In recent years, he has mostly appeared in smaller productions such as <Fly Penguin> (2008) and <Red Family> (2013). Constantly active in theatre and cinema, on top of large number of TV series, he is today regarded as one of the most accomplished actors in Korea.
