  • THE ATTORNEY Deemed Best Film in Even Spread of Winners

The 50th PaekSang Arts Awards, one of three major film industry awards shows, along with the Daejong and Blue Dragon Awards, took place earlier this week in Seoul. SONG Kang-ho was awarded the show’s Grand Prize (Daesang) while his most recent film The Attorney was deemed Best Film. Despite these results, the night’s awards were evenly spread across nine recent commercial works.

After experiencing the most successful year of any actor in Korean history, the Grand Prize triumph for veteran star SONG Kang-ho came as no surprise. In 2013, almost 30 million viewers packed Korean theaters to see his films Snowpiercer, The Attorney and The Face Reader, all of which were recognized at this year’s PaekSang Arts Awards.

The Attorney was one three films to bag two prizes. It received the Best Film Award as well as a Best New Director nod for YANG Woo-suk. LEE Joon-ik’s drama Hope earned the Best Actor prize for its star SEOL Kyung-gu as well as Best Screenplay, for KIM Ji-hye and JO Joong-hoon. Also earning double prizes was JANG Cheol-soo’s Secretly Greatly, whose young star KIM Soo-hyun walked away with both the Best New Actor and Most Popular Actor accolades. Meanwhile, Best Director went ot Bong Joon Ho, for Snowpiercer.

In the other acting categories, SHIM Eun-kyoung took home Best Actress for her part in family comedy Miss Granny, while the supporting roles trophies were taken by LEE Jung-jae for his fiery turn in The Face Reader and JIN Gyeong for her part in surveillance thriller Cold Eyes. Meanwhile, Best New Actress went to Thread of Lies’ KIM Hyang-gi and the actress voted as most popular was GWON Yu-ri from No Breathing.
