- Born in 1969, YANG Woo-suk, after graduating college, worked in the film development department of public broadcaster MBC and later found a job at animation studio Locus. In 2008, he moved to webtoons, penning the scenario for <Robot Taekwon V>, a sequel to legendary animation series of films and comic books that defined the late 1970s in Korea. His second webtoon <If Thou Must Love Me> brought him wider recognition in 2009, and in 2011, he started working on would become his best-known webtoon, <Steel Rain>. His debut as a filmmaker, which came quite late as he was already in his mid-40s, took many by surprise. After completing the script for another of his webtoons, he met college friend and film producer CHOI Jae-won who convinced him to turn it into a film. And so, in late 2013, YANG released <The Attorney>, a courtroom drama set in 1980s Busan starring SONG Kang-ho as the former Korean president ROH Moo-hyun during his early years as a lawyer. The film became an unexpected sensation, drawing well over ten million admissions as it reminded older viewers of the politically charged past and provided younger viewers with a window into that era. It won Best Picture at the Blue Dragon Film Awards and earned YANG Best New Director and Best Screenplay at the Grand Bell Film Awards. He then directed <Steel Rain> (2017), the film adaptation of the second story arc he wrote for his <Steel Rain> webtoon series. The movie managed to sell 4.5 million when it released in December 2017 despite strong competition. His follow-up <Steel Rain2: Summit> (2020) had a total haul of 1.7 million admissions, which was quite a decent result considering that it was released during the Covid-19 pandemic. close
