  • Which Award to be taken at This Cannes Film Festival?
  • by KIM Hyun-jung /  May 17, 2016
  • Korean Cinema’s History at Cannes

PARK Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden was invited in the Competition section at the 69th Cannes Film Festival. Director PARK won the Grand Prix for Old Boy in 2004, the Jury Prize for Thirst in 2009 and returns in the Competition for the third time this year. Cannes’ reaction to The Handmaiden is getting more attention in Korea because no Korean film has received the Palme d’Or yet.

It is not long ago that Korean movies have been awarded in the Competition section at the Cannes Film Festival. SONG Il-gon’s The Picnic picked the Jury Prize in the Short Films Competition in 1999 for the first time in Korea. Later, IM Kwon-taek’s Chihwaseon and PARK Chan-wook’s Old Boy received the Best Director Award in 2002 and Grand Prix in 2004, respectively.

Meanwhile, an actress was honored in 2007 instead of directors. JEON Do-yeon in Secret Sunshine picked the Best Actress Award. Two years later, the Jury Prize was for Thirst, and LEE Chang-dong’s Poetry won the Best Screenplay Award in 2010. Even though Korean feature films could not capture any award in the Competition section since then, MOON Byoung-gon’s SAFE took the Palme d’Or in the Short Films Competition in 2013.

Besides, RYOO Seung-wan’s Crying Fist (2005) grabbed the International Critics Award in 2005, and HONG Sang-soo’s Hahaha (2010) and KIM Ki-duk’s ARIRANG (2011) won the Grand Prize in the Un Certain Regard section in 2010 and 2011. Without the Palme d’Or, Korean movies have been doing well in various sections in this way.
