HAN Hyo-joo and KANG Ha-neul Headline Swashbuckler Sequel

The Pirates: Goblin’s Flag (translated title), the sequel to the hit period swashbuckler The Pirates (2014), completed production on January 11. From director KIM Joung-hoon, the film features a new cast, headed by HAN Hyo-joo, KANG Ha-neul, LEE Kwang-soo, and KWON Sang-woo.

The sequel once again follows different factions who take to the high seas to track down a treasure of the Goryeo Dynasty, which was lost after the foundation of the Joseon Kingdom.

HAN Hyo-joo, known for Cold Eyes (2013) and The Beauty Inside (2015), recently appeared in the Amazon Prime series Treadstone, her English-language debut. Midnight Runners (2017) star KANG Ha-neul hasn’t been seen on screen since completing his military service but has already shot one film since his return, the romantic drama The Story of You and the Rain (translated title).

LEE Kwang-soo recently appeared in Inseparable Bros (2019) and Tazza: One Eyed Jack (2019), while KWON Sang-woo of Spirit of Jeet Keun Do - Once Upon A Time In High School (2003), featured in last year’s Lunar New Year success HITMAN: AGENT JUN. LEE and KWON recently co-starred in The Accidental Detective 2: In Action (2018).

Director KIM Joung-hoon is known for the romantic comedy Petty Romance (2010) and the buddy cop comedy The Accidental Detective (2017), on which he previously partnered with KWON Sang-woo.

The first installment of The Pirates debuted in the summer of 2014, and despite opening in the wake of the record-breaking success of Roaring Currents, it was able to stand its ground and turned into a late-summer hit, eventually banking over eight million viewers. The film starred SON Ye-jin and KIM Nam-gil and was helmed by LEE Seok-hoon.
