Hit Documentary Filmmaker Turns to Narrative Film

LEE Chung-ryoul, the director of the smash hit documentary Old Partner (2008) will return with his a new film next year. The Sound of Cicadas (translated title), director LEE’s first narrative feature film, began production on September 4.

The Sound of Cicadas is described as a story of the deep wounds and healing that occur in a family between life and death. LEE Yang-hee, recently seen in the hit financial thriller Default (2018) will play a father who turns away from his family to focus on his work. JOO Bo-bi of EXIT and The Silenced (2015) will play a daughter full of resentment for her father and struggling in the aftermath of the dearth of her mother. Child actress SEO Yeon-woo will be making her film debut in the project.

Director debuted with the documentary Old Partner, the tale of a farmer and his bull, which premiered at the Busan International Film Festival in 2008, where it earned the Mecenat Award. The film became the most successful documentary film of all time with almost three million viewers. Its record was later surpassed by the 2014 hit My Love, Don’t Cross That River.

Production on the film, which will conclude shooting before the end of the year, is being handled by Jayuro Pictures.
