Well Go USA Picks Up Comfort Woman Drama for North America
Korean sales outfit CONTENTS PANDA has secured several deals for its comfort woman drama Herstory. The latest work by director MIN Kyu-dong, the film bowed in domestic theaters on June 27.
Distributor Well Go USA picked up North American distribution rights while other buyers include Edko Films for Hong Kong and Macao, MM2 Entertainment for Singapore and Malaysia, Cai Chang International for Taiwan, and Cine Asia for Australia and New Zealand. The drama will receive theatrical releases in Taiwan, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand during July.
Based on the true story of the Shimonoseki Trials that took place in the 1990s, the film follows a group of women in Busan engaged in a court case against the Japanese state to highlight the issue of sexual slavery of Korean women by the Japanese military during World War II. The courts eventually ruled in favor of three of the comfort women in the group.
KIM Hee-ae (C'est Si Bon, 2015) plays the group’s lawyer, while KIM Hae-sook (The Thieves, 2012) plays one of the group’s members. Filmmaker MIN Kyu-dong, who debuted when he co-directed the horror Memento Mori in 1999, recently helmed the romantic comedy All About My Wife (2012) and the erotic period thriller The Treacherous (2015).
