LAST CHILD Invited to Young Cinema Competition

Four Korean films are among the lineup of this month’s 42nd Hong Kong International Film Festival, which kicks off on March 19 and runs until April 4. The Korean lineup at HKIFF includes Hong Sangsoo’s Grass, KIM Dae-hwan’s The First Lap (2017), SHIN Dong-seok’s Last Child (2017) and PARK Ki-yong’s Old Love (2017).

Featuring in the ‘Young Cinema Competition’ section will be SHIN Dong-seok’s debut film Last Child. A competitor in the ‘New Currents’ section of the Busan International Film Festival last year, the film went on to be to featured as a ‘Forum’ invitee at this year’s Berlinale and features two grieving parents who grow close to the boy that was saved by their son on the day of his death.

Hong Sangsoo is back in the Hong Kong lineup with his 22nd work, the black and white Grass, which debuted last month in the ‘Forum’ section of the Berlin International Film Festival and teams him up with KIM Min-hee for the fifth time, along with familiar faces such as KIM Sae-byuk (also in fellow HKIFF invitee The First Lap), JUNG Jin-young and SEO Young-hwa. The film is screening in the ‘Master’ program.

The ‘Indie Power’ section will screen KIM Dae-hwan’s second feature The First Lap, a Jeonju Cinema Project from last year, which earned the Best Emerging Director Award from the Locarno International Film Festival in August.

Finally, PARK Ki-yong’s Old Love, another work that premiered in Busan before screening in Berlinale's ‘Forum’ program, rounds out the selection of Korean titles invited to this year’s HKIFF in the ‘Global Vision’ section.

Beyond completed films, E J-yong will also participate with his upcoming project The Big Picture which has been invited to compete in the Hong Kong Asian Financing Forum (HAF), which runs alongside HKIFF and the Hong Kong International Film and TV Market.
