BONG Joon-ho’s Netflix Fantasy Scores 4th Place Rank
BONG Joon-ho’s Netflix-backed fantasy adventure Okja has been selected by review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes as one of its Best Sci-fi/Fantasy films of 2017. The film ranked fourth in the five-title list.
Starring AHN Seo-hyun, Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Steven YEUN and Paul Dano, Okja received an 86% fresh rating from the website, collated from 189 reviews. The Rotten Tomatoes list was topped by Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi and also featured Matt Reeves’ War for the Planet of the Apes, Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2047 and Michael Almereyda’s Marjorie Prime.
The fifth film by Memories of Murder (2003) and The Host (2006) filmmaker BONG, Okja debuted in competition at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. It was also selected as the opening film of the Edinburgh International Film Festival and the closer of the Sydney International Film Festival. In addition to its global Netflix bow on June 28, the film had limited theatrical releases in North America, the United Kingdom and Korea.
Okja has met with acclaim since its Cannes bow and has been featured on 22 top 10 lists by film critics according to website Metacritic. The film was also shortlisted with nine other titles for the Visual Effects category of this year’s Academy Awards. The final five contenders in the category will be revealed on January 23.
