Korean conglomerate CJ’s CGV will open a 4DX theater in Western Europe. “CJ 4DPLEX, CJ CGV’s subsidiary, has signed a partnership contract with Pathé, a cinema chain operator based in Western Europe.” the company said on June 2nd and added, “We will open six more 4DX theaters by the end of this year and run 30 by 2020.”

CJ 4DPLEX opened its first 4DX screens at the Pathé La Villette, Paris in France in March 2017. “Opened in March, 4DX at the Pathé La Villette gained higher performance than expected.” said CGV. ”It has maintained about 80~90% market share since its opening.” Films such as Kong: Skull Island, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales were especially well-received at 4DX screenings.

“This roll-out agreement is expected to be able to reach more European 4DX markets.” said CHOI Byung-hwan, CEO of CJ 4DPLEX. “With our 4DX technology, we are looking forward to further expansions to Western European countries from the success strategies in France.” Meanwhile, Pathé is the biggest cinema chain operator in France. In addition to the company’s 71 theaters in France, it also owns 109 theaters and 1080 screens in Europe including 25 theaters in Netherlands, 8 theaters in Switzerland and 5 theaters in Belgium. The company is known for introducing the newest technologies to innovate theaters, so there are great expectations for this collaboration between the two companies.
