BIFF Supports Release of Closing Film

THE DINNER to Screen Domestically

Though one of the big red carpet destinations on the Asian film calendar, the Busan International Film Festival, outside of glitzy galas and star sightings, is primarily a grounds for fostering fresh talent and discovering new works to introduce to the global stage. Demonstrating its commitment to local independent cinema, BIFF chose an unconventional closing film this year by screening the low-budget The Dinner. In addition, the festival will support the film’s domestic release and aid in its bid for international exposure through foreign festivals and sales to overseas markets.

BIFF festival director LEE Yong-kwan told press reporters that by selecting films for the opening and closing slots, the festival assumes responsibility for these films’ theatrical prospects. A drama about a family that rapidly disintegrates when faced by various misfortunes, The Dinner is KIM Dong-hyun’s third feature and was made an a mere KRW 100 million budget (USD 93,582). KIM previously directed A Shark (which was also invited to BIFF) in 2005 and Hello, Stranger (2007). The director viewed the selection of his film as a from tacit support from BIFF for the independent filmmaking industry.

The Dinner is expected to receive a limited release with the help of BIFF and M-Line Distribution in Korea in the near future, though as yet no date as been set.
