Austin to Screen MOEBIUS, THE FAKE, FATAL and CONFESSION OF MURDER

Fantastic Fest, the Austin-based annual celebration of genre cinema, released its third and final wave of titles for this year’s edition. Taking place at the famed Alamo Drafthouse, this year’s festival will run over September 19-26.

KIM Ki-duk’s Moebius will receive its American premiere, following its world debut at the recent 70th Venice International Film Festival, where it screened out of competition, and its current run at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). YEON Sang-ho’s new animation The Fake is also playing at TIFF, where it had its world premiere. Both films will also screen at next month’s 18th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF).

From last year’s BIFF is LEE Don-ku’s debut indie feature Fatal, which takes a hard look at the aftermath of youth sex abuse in Korea. Showbox’s Confession of Murder, starring JUNG Jae-young and PARK Si-hoo, rounds out the Korean selections at the fest. Directed by JUNG Byung-gil, the film features a chase for a serial killer reigniting years after the original crimes, following the expiration of the statute of limitations.

Boasting more dark themes than genre tropes, save for Confession of Murder, Fantastic Fest’s crop of Korean films in 2013 reflects cinema that seeks to explore the mores of Korean society.
