BONG Joon-ho Scores 4th DGK Award for OKJA

JANE’s CHO Hyunhoon Wins Best New Director

The Director’s Cut Awards, put on by the Directors’ Guild of Korea (DGK), gave its top prize this year to BONG Joon-ho for his Netflix-backed Okja. It is the first award for the film in the 2017 end-of-year awards run, with some bodies ruling the US-financed project out of contention.

It is BONG’s fourth time to pick up a prize at the event, following his Best New Director win for Barking Dogs Never Bite in 2000 and previous Best Director wins for Memories of Murder (2003) and Snowpiercer (2013).

CHO Hyunhoon picked up this year’s Best New Director accolade for his indie drama Jane. The Vision Award was given to Criminal Conspiracy director CHOI Seung-ho and the Genre Film Award went to YEON Sang-ho for TRAIN TO BUSAN.

In the acting stakes it was SUL Kyung-gu and NA Moon-hee who claimed the Best Actor and Actress Prizes for their roles in The Merciless and I Can Speak. Best New Actor went to CHOI Gwi-hwa of A Taxi Driver and CHOI Hee-seo earned the Best New Actress prize for Anarchist from Colony.

Beyond Okja, the DGK also offered special mentions for the six most voted on films of the past year, which included I Can Speak, Anarchist from Colony, A Taxi Driver, The Age of Shadows, The King and Criminal Conspiracy. All Korean film releases between July 1, 2016 and September 1, 2017 were considered by the group, which include 300 members.
