Against the backdrop of the Joseon Dynasty, The Night Owl is a thriller that depicts the story of a blind acupuncturist who can only see at night due to illness. He happens to witness the death of the crown prince and tries to reveal what happened overnight. The young blind acupuncturist who has excellent acupuncture skills enters the palace in recognition of his ability. Around that time, Crown Prince Sohyun, who was taken hostage for 8 years by the Qing dynasty, returned home. The king is pleased with reuniting with his beloved son, but somehow he seems very anxious. One night, the acupuncturist, who can only see in the dark, witnesses Prince Sohyun's death and tries to tell the truth but encounters a greater secret and conspiracy at the moment.

This film is a ‘Faction,’ a fact-based fiction thriller that adds imagination to historical facts. According to the literature, there is a single line of records describing, "Prince Sohyun seemed to have died from poisoning." Director Ahn Taejin starts with this one-line record and shows his imagination. Here, the director adds the plot that an acupuncturist with day blindness witnesses the death of the princess, creating a new storyline. Actor Ryu Junyeol plays the role of the acupuncturist who cannot see during the day, and Yoo Haijin plays the king who is anxious to protect his throne, creating tension in the film. The Night Owl is Ahn Taejin's feature directorial debut, and he worked as an assistant director for Director Lee Joonik's King and the Clown, a costume drama that recorded 10 million audiences.
