Following a recent small screen return in Happiness, Han Hyojoo marks her Korean big screen return in The Pirates : The Last Royal Treasure, four years after Illang: The Wolf Brigade(2018). Han stars as pirate captain Haerang, who teams up bandit leader Moochi, played by Kang Haneul, who was recently seen in Endless Rain (2021) and A YEAR-END MEDLEY (2021), to take over a Japanese pirate ship and head out in search of a fabled treasure. Also seeking the rich is Heungsoo (Kwon Sangwoo), the leader of a rebel militia who dreams of ruling over a small island in the south.

Following a similar formula as its predecessor, The Pirates : The Last Royal Treasure assembles an all-new cast of Korean stars for a new swashbuckling adventure. The original The Pirates(2014), directed by Lee Seokhoon and headlined by Son Yejin and Kim Namgil, opened in the summer of 2014 in the wake of Roaring Currents(2014) and became a surprise hit with 8.6 million viewers. One of the two local releases timed for the upcoming Lunar New Year holidays, which this year will be a five-day weekend kicking off on January 29, The Pirates : The Last Royal Treasure is already comfortably leading the competition on the reservations chart and appears set to open with a bang.
