33-year-old Woori (Son Sukku) dreams of being a novelist, but for the moment, he’s a junior reporter earning his keep writing a sex column. He is single and doesn’t like to be alone but has struggled with romantic relationships. Meanwhile, the 29-year-old Jayoung (Jun Jongseo), also single, has a strong personality and is striving to become a mature 30-year-old, but she is saddled with debt and has experienced several failures in her life. Among those is the boyfriend who just dumped her after a month-long relationship. This prompts her to swear off men, but before long, she and Woori meet each other through a dating app.

Nothing Serious is the commercial film debut of Jeong Gayoung, the director of acclaimed indie titles such as Bitch on the Beach (2016), Hit the Night (2017) and HEART (2019). Jeong has drawn several comparisons to indie auteur Hong Sangsoo owing to the autobiographical and confessional style of her films, which routinely feature characters getting into awkward personal situations during long conversation scenes that often feature alcohol. Her mainstream debut brings together two rising film stars, Jun Jongseo of Burning (2018) and The Call (2020) and Son Sukku, who recently appeared in the Netflix series D.P. and will soon be seen in The Roundup, a sequel to The Outlaws (2017).
