In 1998, 11-year-old Miso (Kim Dami) and her family leave Seoul for Jeju Island. At her new school, she meets another girl, Haeun (Jeon Sonee), and the two quickly form a strong bond. They take drawing lessons together and share a sketchbook in which they can express their feelings, each in her own style. Even though they promised to never let anything stand between them, they start to grow apart once Haeun prefers to spend time with her boyfriend (Byeon Woosuk). After graduating, Miso decides to move back to Seoul to pursue her dreams of emancipation and adventures, while Haeun prefers a stable life in Jeju. Years later, a chance encounter brings them back into each other’s life.

Director Min Yongkeun had almost vanished from the radar after his brilliant debut in the indie drama Re-encounter (2011), winner of Best Picture at the Seoul Independent Film Festival, which was following a teenager who had to deal with an unwanted pregnancy and a boyfriend who disappeared as a result. With this remake of the Chinese film Soul Mate (2016) by Derek Tsang Kwok-cheung, which earned seven nominations at the Golden Horse Film Awards and was itself adapted from a novel by Anni Baobei, Min found the perfect story to make his long-awaited comeback.

Lead Kim Dami is one of the most promising up-and-coming Korean actors of this generation, even though you could count her credited roles on one hand. She broke through with Park Hoonjung’s SF-action film The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion (2018), winning the Grand Bell Award and the Blue Dragon Award for best newcomer as well as Best Actress from the Fantasia International Film Festival. She then gained international fame by starring in the hit drama series Itaewon Class (2020). In comparison, her co-star Jeon Sonee has more experience, having debuted in the 2015 film Untouchable Lawman. She recently gained wider recognition as the female lead of the period drama series Our Blooming Youth (2023).
