Korean Box Office Report – August 2025

“Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle” and “Can’t Be Helped” Top the Box Office in September

The total box office revenue for September 2025 reached ₩77.8 billion, with 7.52 million admissions, marking a 22.3% drop in revenue (₩22.3 billion) and a 25.6% decline in audience numbers (2.59 million) compared to the same month last year. Despite the strong performances of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc, Can’t Be Helped, and Face, overall revenue and attendance fell short of September 2024, when Veteran 2 (released September 13, 2024) was a major box office hit.

Korean films recorded ₩34.2 billion in revenue and 3.4 million admissions, representing a 57.8% decrease in revenue (₩46.8 billion) and a 58.2% decrease in admissions (4.73 million) year-on-year. Unlike last year, the Chuseok holiday falls in October this year, resulting in major holiday releases such as Can’t Be Helped and Boss opening in late September and early October—diminishing September’s overall box office for domestic titles to less than half of the previous year’s.

Foreign films, on the other hand, earned ₩43.6 billion with 4.12 million admissions, up 128.6% in revenue (₩24.6 billion) and 108% in attendance (2.14 million) compared to September 2024. Japanese animated features such as Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle and Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc drove this growth, with Japanese films capturing a 36.2% market share, second only to Korean films at 43.9%.

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle led the overall box office with ₩20.5 billion in revenue and 1.87 million admissions in September. As of the end of September, its cumulative gross stood at ₩54.5 billion (5.03 million admissions). By October 13, the film reached ₩58.4 billion, surpassing Suzume (₩57.8 billion, including the special edition) to become the highest-grossing Japanese film ever released in Korea.

Among Korean releases, Can’t Be Helped—directed by Park Chan-wook and starring Lee Byung-hun—ranked #1 among domestic films and #2 overall, grossing ₩12 billion with 1.23 million admissions.

Director Yeon Sang-ho’s low-budget film Face (produced for just over ₩200 million) ranked #3 overall, taking in ₩9.6 billion and 930,000 admissions. Released between major blockbusters, Face became a word-of-mouth success, with cumulative earnings of ₩10.9 billion (1.07 million admissions) as of October 13.

In the independent and arthouse sector, the re-release of Princess Mononoke grossed ₩2.08 billion (170,000 admissions) to take the top spot, while Korean indie horror Homecam—released exclusively through CGV—ranked second with ₩905 million (95,930 admissions). Perfect Blue, another Japanese animated re-release, placed fourth with ₩273 million (28,401 admissions).

Overall, September 2025 reflected the continued dominance of Japanese animation at the Korean box office and the surprising success of small-budget Korean films, while the absence of major holiday blockbusters led to a quieter month marked by diverse genres and mid-scale releases.
