Box office results of space films

Damien CHAZELLE, who previously told us a fantastical love story with La La Land, is coming back with a space film, First Man, about the first human to walk on the moon. After using the musical format to tell his romantic story, CHAZELLE took a documentary approach to realize a realistic space fantasia. With a budget of USD 70 million, the film was released on October 12 in North America and scored USD 16 million in its opening weekend. It went on to earn USD 23 million in its first week. Released a week later in Korea, the film had a rather slow start with only 70,271 admissions on its first day but turned the tide over the weekend, for a total admission of 423,214 (as of October 22 in the morning). As technologies in film have been progressing swiftly, films about space now have reached a high level of visual fidelity and captured the imagination of the audience. Among them, Interstellar scored 10,309,432 admissions and ranks 4th among foreign films released in Korea. Besides this film, The Martian, about a man who made an emergency landing on Mars, and Gravity, with its beautiful depiction of a human lost in space, both attracted more than 3 million spectators.
