Commune, Seoul is a documentary film that focuses on a commune based in the capital of South Korea. Founded on the knowledge of humanities, the members of ‘SuyuNomo’ have gathered to discuss the philosophies of Marx, Althusser, Foucault and other savants. Since a commune has never existed before in South Korea, they think, this may be the first real cooperative ever assembled in the southern half of the peninsula. In this film, the camera intermittently shifts from the commune to a run-down neighborhood nearby. Despite modern urbanization, slums unfortunately still exist in Seoul. While they stand empty from forced government evictions and have been partially torn down, they remain a part of the urban landscape in Seoul. This particular one next to the commune has a makeshift protest camp set up by former laborers to demonstrate against unfair labor practices. This film explores the divergent scenery of Seoul 2014.
