With the introduction of foreign capital to attract tourists, gotjawal forest was destroyed. Large-scale casino and amenities are being established on the world’s one and only stone kiln. Jeju bowl, which was once vanished because of tumultuous industrialization for 40 years, came to life again with the efforts of descendents.
The young potter, who keeps his pot boiling by driving a truck, started full-fledged work to restore traditional Jeju earthenware. After his deceased father, who tried to restore traditional stone kilns, he has been crafting bowls, keeping his fifth generation of family business. The perfect restoration, however, is still far off for the young artisan. The restoration of the Jeju-style pottery is in over his hand. Added to that, it is difficult to find the soil used for making earthenware and woods for stone kiln. Luxury villas and houses sprawling out in rural village led to prompt rush of fire trucks upon heating stone kiln in that area. Looking at the endless development craze in his hometown, the potter is not confident to hand over his work to his children.
