Layne, an American adoptee returns home to South Korea after 40 years of separation, and finds his biological mother fighting against breast cancer. Although he was reared in a different culture speaking a different language, their communication becomes easier as they realized that they have a lot more in common than they knew. Although at first, they begin by using a translation application that lands them in giggles, Layne embarks on a new challenge in his foreign ‘motherland’ to learn the language in order to support his mother through cancer. But his curiosity about his biological father begins to grow, although his mother tries to keep the past buried. While helping other adoptees find their birth parents, Layne also tries to seek out his father and step siblings who are as old as his mother. As the mother-and-son relationship grows, Layne prepares his mother for a long haul trip to Minnesota to meet with his adoptive family for the first time. Fear and anxiety grows for the upcoming trip that will inevitably become a cultural and an emotional journey, especially since Layne’s mother has never been outside of Korea before.
