Synopsis
The Present, 2016. Claire is a Korean living in Paris who is not interested in Korea at all. Her young brother Julien(10) is even less interested and enjoys wearing a kilt, influenced by the Scottish hero William Wallace played by Mel Gibson. Their parents have retired from the Korean company they used to work for and are getting ready for their old age by setting up a Korean restaurant. One day, they get into a serious car accident. Claire’s mother dies and her father is in serious condition. In a state of shock and grief, Claire goes through her mother’s things and discovers she was adopted when her parents were in Korea. She discusses this with her boyfriend and decides to go to Korea to look for her birth mother whom she has never met and didn’t even know about until then. With her parents out of place, the restaurant is temporarily closed and the doctor promises to contact her if there is any change in her father’s condition. She leaves her boyfriend behind but takes her little brother. On the way, she tells him that they are not really related but he says it’s no big deal to him and that Claire is the only sister he has. When they arrive in Seoul, they go straight to the address of the babybox and meet Reverend Isaac. A young man called Min-gi is helping him with his work. Min-gi was also found in the babybox and is now like a son to the reverend. This special connection brings Claire and Min-gi together and they fall in love. Then they find an old picture of kids who were found in the babybox and grew up there. Claire and Min-gi are in sitting side by side in the picture.
The doctor in Paris contacts her and informs her that her father has regained consciousness. Claire now realizes she must leave this new relationship behind and return home. Isaac finds the letter left by her birth mother with Claire in the babybox and gives it to her. Claire bids farewell to Min-gi and returns to Paris with Julien. She has so many questions to ask her father but just greets him happily without saying anything. A few years later, the Korean restaurant that her mother had worked in with them is packed with patrons while Julien and his father are messing around in the hall and we see Claire with Min-gi. The letter from her birth mother appears with the ending credits accompanied by music.
