According to the
Korean Film Council’s Integrated Ticket Sales Network on March 2nd,
Kingsman: The Secret Service (henceforth
Kingsman) hit 3,375,572 in ticket sales and took the top spot at the weekend box office. Unlike the smooth run
Kingsman is enjoying, only two domestic titles were able to make it to the top ten chart which were
Detective K: Secret of the Lost Island and
Ode to My Father.
Detective K: Secret of the Lost Island had a good start during the Lunar New Year Holiday thanks to the unbeatable teamwork of actors
KIM Myung-min and
OH Dal-su. The detective story reached 3,678,396 in admissions, but the attendance fell after the holidays and it is in doubt if the film will bypass the 2.7 million admissions record made by the original. Same with
Ode to My Father which has slowed down after hitting 14 million in ticket sales and it seems unlikely that it will be able to overthrow the all time Korean box office number one, Roaring Currents.
Hollywood films that released last week, Fifty Shades of Grey, Back to the Beginning, and Focus all had a lukewarm start. Compared to the reception of Fifty Shades of Grey which swiped the North American box office, the film is getting the cold shoulder from the Korean audiences. More interestingly, Parasyte: Part 1 which is a Japanese film based on a famous comic book had a smooth start with 6th place on the chart although the film was rated R. Parasyte: Part 1 is gaining attention due to the fan base in Korea for the original comic book.
Another R-rated film, The Imitation Game is doing quite well. The film received the Best Writing Adapted Screenplay from the Academy Awards which likely boosted up the numbers but the performance of the film also lies on the fact that there are many Korean fans of Benedict Cumberbatch in Korea.
