OUR LOVE STORY and THE WORLD OF US Selected for Competition
Korean indie cinema will be alive and well at next month’s 2016 edition of the Tokyo Filmex. KIM Ki-duk’s THE NET has been invited to open the event while Our Love Story and The World of Us, which are both directed by women and mainly comprise casts of women, will take part in the festival’s competitive lineup. Korean cineaste PARK Jung-bum will also take part as a member of the main jury, which this year will be led by noted Asian film expert Tony Rayns.
KIM’s THE NET, which debuted as the opening title of the Venice Days section at the Venice International Film Festival this year, features RYOO Seung-bum as a North Korean fisherman who inadvertently drifts across the border when his fishing line gets caught in his motor. The film has also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and has been the auteur’s most successful film in Korea since Pieta (2012), after welcoming almost 55,000 viewers (USD 366,000) after 12 days in theaters.
From acclaimed short filmmaker YOON Ga-eun, The World of Us debuted at the Berlin International Film Festival and has played at several international events, as well as attracted 47,000 spectators (USD 310,000) in Korean theaters earlier this year.
