  • SONG Kang-ho Boards New LEE Joon-ik Film
  • by Pierce Conran /  Apr 09, 2014
  • Star Will Perform as Joseon Era King

Korean star SONG Kang-ho, redhot after his record breaking 2013, which saw him appear in three films that, combined, attracted over 30 million viewers, has settled on his next project. SONG will star as King Yeongjo in veteran director LEE Joon-ik’s new film Sado.

LEE’s film will tell the story of the Sado, the Crown Prince who was in line for the throne but was deemed unfit to rule and, at age 27, was condemned to death by his father. SONG will play the father, King Yeongjo, and the film will explore the reason behind his execution order.

Last year, SONG cemented his status as Korea’s biggest star by appearing in Bong Joon Ho’s blockbuster sci-fi Snowpiercer, which will be released in the United States in June, the Chuseok period hit The Face Reader, and the late year ten million admissions hit The Attorney.

Director LEE made a successful comeback to filmmaking in 2013 with the powerful drama Hope, starring SEOL Kyung-gu and UHM Ji-won, following a brief three-year retirement from filmmaking. LEE previously made the hit period film The King and the Clown in 2005.

Additional casting has yet to be confirmed but shooting for Sado is expected to begin this coming June.
