The Attorney (produced by Withus Film), a fiction film inspired by the late president ROH Moo-hyun, had a press conference on the 19th, one month ahead of its release, at CGV Apgujung. It is one of the most eagerly awaited films of the second half of 2013, featuring SONG Kang-ho (Snowpiercer, The Face Reader), OH Dal-su (The Thieves), KWAK Do-won (The Berlin File, An Ethics Lesson).

The main character of The Attorney is SONG Woo-suk (played by SONG Kang-ho), a tax counselor whose education ended at high school. The story takes place in Busan in the 1980s. One day, Jin-woo, a young son of a widow at a local diner, is arrested by the police for no reason, which eventually leads SONG to legally defend the young man against an evil conspiracy set up by the government.

The historical event that Jin-woo is said to be involved in is called “Burim,” an important conspiracy setup by the CHUN Doo-hwan government in 1981. To set up the relevant social environment for the dictatorial government, authorities arrested 22 students and teachers in a social science reading club and viciously tortured them. Just like SONG in the film, the late president ROH Moo-hyun was the legal counsel for this case.

The attitude of the actors at the conference was very careful since the film deals with historical events and individuals. YANG Woo-suk, the rookie director of The Attorney, announced that they “wanted to share the story of a man who wanted to hold on to common sensical virtues in hard times and to go beyond the boundary that society had set.” SONG Kang-ho explained that “it is a popular film depicting the passion and attitude of life in the 1980s. It is not a political film with explicit political slogans.” The Attorney was financed and will be distributed by NEW, with also released Miracle in Cell No.7 and Hide and Seek, and will be released on the 19th of December.
