  • by Pierce Conran /  Aug 12, 2013
  • CHO Jae-hyun Picks Up Best Actor

The Fantasia International Film Festival, one of the premiere genre film festivals in the world, concluded its 2013 edition on August 7th with a closing and awards ceremony. Among the awards recipients of the evening were a trio of Korean victors, reflecting the diversity of the nation’s output.

CHO Jae-hyun picked up the Best Actor prize for The Weight, the 5th feature by JEON Kyu-hwan, which has been enjoying a lengthy run on the festival circuit. It debuted during last year’s Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Queer Lion prize.

Among the Asian films on show at Fantasia this year, LEE Won-suk’s romantic comedy How to Use Guys with Secret Tips earned the Bronze prize for Best Asian Feature. Outside of features, YEON Sang-ho’s mid-length work The Window received a special mention from the jury, which said of the animation: “We recognize this film for its outstanding script and skilled realization of very difficult subject matter.”

This year’s Fantasia, which began on July 19th, was the fest’s biggest edition yet, experiencing a year-on-year increase of 15% and recording a total of 125,000 viewers. A total of 10 Korean feature films were screened, confirming the popularity of Korean cinema among genre film fans.
