  • With 5-star reviews, PIETA is becoming a critical darling
  • by LEE Eun-sun /  Sep 07, 2012
  • Will KIM Ki-duk's newest be able to take home a prize from Venice?

As KIM Ki-duk receives more and more attention from the media and cineastes of the world, the possibility of Pieta winning awards at the Venice Film Festival has been on the tip of everyone's tongue. Early reviews of Pieta have given the the film a encouraging mark of 4.5/5 stars. The film received five stars from Positif France, Li Messaggero, La Nuova Venezia, Il Gazzettino and Film TV Daily. La Stampa and Critica Online gave it four-and-a-half stars while La Repubblica, Ciak and VeNews Daily gave it four.

By September 5th 14 films, including Pieta, were screened among the total of 18 films invited to the competition section. Pieta has been one of the best rated films of the 14. Considering that predictions by the European and American press at the three major international film festival have fairly accurate over the last three years, Pieta's chances are quite good to beat the competition, even the four films yet to be screened.

The Hollywood Reporter picked Pieta as a probable winner of the Golden Lion saying, “Pieta is considered a dark-horse contender for Venice’s Golden Lion and was mostly well-received by critics.” Reuters offered an article entitled, “Brutal, beautiful South Korean film jolts Venice.” Pieta will be introduced to Korean viewers after its domestic release on September 6th.
