  • "Hoping that the DMZ will be remembered in history"
  • by JANG Sung-ran /  Sep 04, 2012
  • The 4th DMZ Korea International Documentary Festival holds an introductory press conference

The 4th DMZ Korean International Documentary Festival (DMZDOCS) held a press conference with Festival Chairman KIM Mun-su, Festival Director CHO Jae-hyun, Programmer JUNG Woo-jeong and film director JEON Kyu-hwan in attendance.

The press briefing was in the format of a talk show and the event was emceed by actor LEE Han-wi. Chairman KIM said "The DMZ is perceived as a symbol of political tension and pain, something that bars communication between people, but our dream is that one day the DMZ will become associated with communication, and that is the basis of this festival. I hope that the DMZ will always be remembered in history.

Director CHO said that the festival is being recognized as an important and unique documentary festival and that this year will see screenings of many films that can be enjoyed by a variety of different ages. Programmer JUNG said that 115 films from 36 countries will be shown this year, up from last year's 101 films from 31 nations.

The opening film this year is Ping Pong, which humorously captures elderly people between 80 and 100 who attempt to play table tennis. The documentary is by Hugh Hartford. Opening films from previous editions of this festival have been rather serious but the festival organizers explained that the choice this year shows their attempt to make the event more audience-friendly and communication-oriented.

This year's publicity ambassadors, high-energy boy band 2AM, relfect a similar attitude on the part of the festival organizers. 2AM said that, "As a group of young people who have always been interested in the documentary genre, we will do our best to publicize this great event." DMZDOCS will open on 21st of September and conclude on the 27th in the Paju Publishing City area.
