  • CGV Strikes Deal for 1st Hollywood ScreenX Title

  • WE KILL DEATH to Be Directed by Eric Brevig

During a presentation held last week in their theater CGV Yongsan, Seoul, CJ CGV announced that their 270-degree immersive screening technology ScreenX will be adopted for the first time in a Hollywood film. The project is We Kill Death and will be directed by Eric Brevig, known for helming Journey to the Center of the Earth and his visual effects work on Total Recall, Men in Black and The Maze Runner.

Launched in 2013, ScreenX is a screening technology which projects images not just on the front screen of a theater but also the side walls in specially equipped locations. The format was first demonstrated through KIM Jee-woon’s short The X (2013), starring GANG Dong-won, which was invited to the Busan International Film Festival.

While prior feature films that had the option to be viewed in ScreenX applied the technique in the post-production stage, Brevig’s film will be the first to incorporate it from pre-production and use three cameras to film the action. We Kill Death follows thrill-seekers who scale the world’s skyscrapers to pose for photographs. While the cast isn’t fixed, urban climbers Mustang Wanted, Oleg Cricket, Vitaliy Raskalov and Vadim Makhorov will feature in the film, which will be produced by Let It Play and is set to begin production in the first half of next year.

During the event in Yongsan, Brevig stated that “As a filmmaker, I try to engage the audience in the stories that I’m telling. ScreenX is a technology that allows me to immerse the audience better in the film that we’re telling.”

Incoming films which will be viewable in ScreenX include RYOO Seung-wan’s Battleship Island and ZHANG Yimou’s The Great Wall with Matt Damon.
