Sylvia CHANG Heads International Delegation
Taiwanese actress and filmmaker Sylvia CHANG has been tapped to preside over the jury of the
Busan International Film Festival’s signature New Currents competition section. CHANG, director of
20 30 40 (2004), recently debuted her film
Murmur of the Hearts, which was the opening film of the Hong Kong International Film Festival. The New Currents section, which focuses on first or second films from new Asian filmmakers, will bestow two prizes worth USD 30,000. Previous winners include JIA Zhangke’s
Pickpocket in 1998,
LEE Yoon-ki’s
This Charming Girl in 2004 and
PARK Jung-bum’s
The Journals of Musan in 2010.
This year’s 20th BIFF edition will also feature Indian filmmaker Anurag KASHYAP, who has been making a name for himself and Indian genre cinema with works such as
Gangs of Wasseypur (2012) and
Ugly (2013), German actress Nastassja Kinski of Wim Wenders’
Paris, Texas (1984),
Memento Mori (1999) and
Late Autumn (2010), director
KIM Tae-yong and Village Voice chief film critic Stephanie Zacharek on the jury.
Meanwhile, last week BIFF also revealed that they would present an ‘Asian Cinema 100’ section at this year’s edition. BIFF and the Busan Cinema Center polled 73 professionals to collate the best Asian films in history. This year’s section will screen the top 11 titles from the poll, which include: Tokyo Story (1953), Rashomon (1950), In The Mood For Love (2000), The Apu Trilogy (1955), A City Of Sadness (1989), Seven Samurai (1954), A Brighter Summer Day (1991), Spring In A Small Town (1948), Still Life (2006), The Housemaid (1960) and Close-Up (1990).
This year, BIFF will take place over October 1-10.
