Festival Heavyweights Headed Down Under
Four of the most successful Korean festival titles of the last 12 months are headed to the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF), which will kick off its 63rd edition on the 31st of July. Cannes invitees
A Hard Day and
A Girl at My Door, and award-winners
Our Sunhi and
Han Gong-ju are all set to take part in the Australian film jubilee.
Back in May, A Hard Day and A Girl at My Door bowed in the Cannes Film Festival’s Director’s Fortnight and Un Certain Regard sections, respectively. While both garnered glowing reviews on the Croisette, A Hard Day proved to be equally successful with the public as it was with critics when it went on to conquer the Korean box office. To date, the film has brought in 3.42 million spectators and still ranks in the local top ten. The action noir, directed by KIM Seong-hun, stars LEE Sun-kyun and CHO Jin-woong. Meanwhile, A Girl at My Door featured lauded performances from BAE Doo-na, KIM Sae-ron and SONG Sae-byeok, and was directed by newcomer July JUNG and produced by renowned cineaste LEE Chang-dong.
HONG Sangsoo’s Our Sunhi, his second film of 2013 following Nobody’s Daughter Haewon, debuted at the Locarno International Film Festival, earning the auteur the Silver Leopard prize for Best Director. LEE Sujin’s blistering indie debut Han Gong-ju turned heads at the Busan International Film Festival before going on to win the top prizes at the Marrakech, Rotterdam and Fribourg International Film Festivals, along other accolades.
All four titles are features in the ‘Accent on Asia’ program and are screening for the first time in Australia. MIFF will take place until August 17th.
