The Korean Cultural Center UK (KCCUK) has been very active in its promotion of Korean cinema over the last few years. In addition to its popular annual London Korean Film Festival, which staged its 8th edition last November, the KCCUK has staged year-long events dedicated to Korean film over the last two years. They are following suit in 2014 with a new program entitled the ‘Year of Film Professionals,’ which will invite various professionals working in different aspects of the Korean film industry to the British capital.

 

In 2012, the KCCUK staged the ‘Year of 12 Directors,’ where each month four film from one director were screened with the filmmaker in question making an appearance in the city for the final screening. Among the showcased filmmakers were LEE Myung-se, PARK Kwang-su and IM Kwon-taek, who had a special showcase screening 15 of his films.

 

Last year, a ‘Year of 4 Actors’ took place, which followed a similar format over longer three-month intervals. Invited performers included HA Jung-woo and MOON So-ri.

 

Kicking off 2014’s ‘Year of Film Professionals’ will be PARK Hoon-jung, the noted screenwriter behind RYOO Seung-wan’s The Unjust (2010) and KIM Jee-woon’s I Saw the Devil (2010), who debuted as a director with 2011’s The Showdown and scored his first hit as a filmmaker with last year’s gangster saga New World.

 

Focusing on screenplay, music, cinematography and production design in Korean cinema, four to six films, which will culminate in a Q&A and workshop event, will be screened each quarter.
