HONG Gil-dong is a famous character in Korean classical novel. HONG was a child of a concubine in a noble family but becomes a Robin Hood-like hero helping poor people with his superhuman power. However, the other HONG in
Phantom Detective is far from the typical hero. He is cynical and cruel even though he punishes villains.
Detective HONG Gil-dong (
LEE Je-hoon) works in an illegal detective agency and punishes bad guys in the dark. Meanwhile, he tracks down the criminal KIM Byung-duk (
PARK Keun-hyong) who murdered his mother twenty years ago. HONG finally locates the murderer but he is abducted by a strange group, and HONG undertakes two granddaughters of KIM Byung-duk, Dong-i (
ROH Jeong-eui) and Mal-soon (
KIM Ha-na). He looks for KIM with these little assistants against his will and faces the evil gang Gwang-eun-hoi which tries to overturn the world.
Phantom Detective has uncertain time background like director
JO Sung-hee’s successful feature debut
A Werewolf Boy (2012). The background of
Phantom Detective is more like hard-boiled novel than reality. However, it also criticizes unjust Korean society. HONG Gil-dong that LEE Je-hoon played is unique and attractive character, and two kids following him are reckoned to be unusual child roles in local film industry.
