LOGLINE

Time is 1993, and Jeju Island’s haenyeo (a female diver using traditional methods) BAE Gi-sam provides a hiding place for Gwang-hyuk, a half black-half Korean teen who betrayed his gang.
Just as the two loners grow on each other, the gang finds the boy and begins to exact its revenge.
BAE’s fierce resistance against the gang provides another form of haven to the boy.

PRODUCTION INTENT

The movie <BADA> was conceptualized by the Korean-American director, who found inspiration from her own life living on the margins of society.
Korea is always changing rapidly, and the director turned her eyes to those who have been pushed outside the mainstream.
As such, the movie highlights the problems of Korean society’s rampant lookism and authoritarianism, and a reflection the margins of Korean society.
<BADA> begins by inviting two different worlds on to the stage. One is the uncontrollable worlds, namely society, mankind and nature. The other is the haven of one’s inner self. In other words, the world of inner city crimes, and the sea are two contrasting worlds.
The small house the protagonist lives in represents the character’s isolation from society.
The director drew inspiration from the works of leading naturalists Zola and Antonioni. The characters are set into uncontrollable environments, and their efforts to escape this environment is observed.
<BADA>is a place where lonely souls come together, and it is a haven for the soul.

SYNOPSIS

BAE Gi-sam is a middle aged haenyeo living on the Jeju Island. Her life is cut off from the world, isolated in the sea, her job, and her small home she once shared with the deceased child.
Her younger brother BAE Cheol-geun, who is a gangster, sends her KIM Gwang-hyuk, a half-black boy, to hide after he made the boy steal from thegang.
She is thrown into an unexpected and unusual house-sharing arrangement.
Gi-sam and Gwang-hyuk, who have been marginalized by society, come to rely on each other and form a sense of fellowship.
As their shared world begins to take shape, the gang finds him and come to Jeju to take revenge. The gang shoot Gwang-hyuk in the head. Although he survives, he is left with severe brain damage. Gi-sam and Gwang-hyuk lose all will, and they become trapped in their own world, and he begs her to let him go.
The emptiness that filled their lives before they met each other returns. They head to the sea, their last remaining haven, to seek salvation.

PROJECT PROGRESS

The first draft of scenario for <BADA>, which reached the second stage of Sundance Screenwriting Lab in 2016, has been completed, and is being further developed.
This year, the project was select for Ties That Bind, and participated in Udine Far East Film Festival where the project was positively assessed. The project was nominated for No Border category of EAVE IFP, and Ties That Bind mentor Clair Downs gave her recommendations to Jerusalem International Film Lab.
In May, a meeting was held with Malaysian film fund Ace Pictures Entertainment along with the project’s French producer Celine Zen and US producer Jimmy Ferguson at the Cannes Film Festival film market.
Peter Wong of Ace Pictures, and members of the board of directors showed interest in the project, and funding plans are currently being established.
Celine Zen plans to apply for funding from France’s BDA, and he has requested that applications be filed at Rome’s MIA – MercatoInternazione Audiovisivo – in October. The director plans to participate in the second event of Ties ThatBind that will be held in Singapore in December.
