PRODUCTION INTENT

1. The first Yoshimoto Banana novel to be made into a film in Korea!
<Memories of a Dead End> is Yoshimoto Banana’s favorite among her works.
The novel conveys elegant and sad emotions in Yoshimoto Banana’s characteristically delightful way.
In terms of genre, this movie is a melodrama.
The movie begins as melodrama, but develops into a humorousand deep coming-of-age drama.
The protagonist loses her love, but she finds solace in many different loves.
2. A sentimental movie set in Nagoya made by a female Korean director, and a Korean actress!
In <Memories of a Dead End>, sentimentality stands out.
People who have been hurt in life like unfamiliar places.
A story of healing through meeting new people in an unfamiliar place can easily induce empathy from the viewer no matter what city the story take place.
3. Everyone comes to a dead end at least once in their lifetime!
We all come to a dead end at least once in our lives.
When we are hurt by love, when we are sick, when old wounds are uncovered, we need to take rest in order to go forward again.
Behind each negative, and each unhappiness awaits a positive, and happiness of the same scale.
A message of healing found at a dead end awaits.

SYNOPSIS

It willbe okay, no, Idon’t want to be okay!
27-year old Na-Young is a teacher in training, who is preparing for the examination for middle school teacher’s certificate.
Her family is ordinary but they share a strong bond, and, although far away, she has a fiancé.
However, difficulties in finding a job makes her feel trapped.
She wants to escape from her situation, and takes off to Nagoya to see her fiancé.
Na-young hopes to surpriseher finance, but she finds a strange woman at his apartment.
The woman is attractive in a way completely different from Na-young.
The woman tells Na-young that she and Na-young’s fiancé have been together for some time, and plan to get married soon.

Sadness goes away, slowly, but surely!
Na-young has nowhere to go, but she does not want to go back to Korea like this.
A distant relative who lives in Nagoya introduces her to a cafélocated on a dead end, and Na-young decides to stay there.
At the café, Na-young meets a free spirit named Shaw.
Shaw is effectively in charge of running the café.
Na-young spends her days crying over old photos of herself and her fiancéin the attic of the café, and helps Shaw run the café during the evening.
Slowly she comes to know the café’s many patrons.
And slowly, her wounds begin to heal. She has come to enjoy unfamiliar emotions in an unfamiliar place.
Shaw’s openness also begins to influence and change Na-young.

2015 February: Obtained rights to Korean dramatization of Yoshimoto Banana’s <Memories of a Dead End>
~ 2017 February: Planning for 2 years, completed 6th edit of the scenario
~ 2017 March:Stressed that the film is based on Yoshimoto Banana novel in contacting Japanese partners
~ 2017 April:Korea Creative Content Agencychose the project for a support program
~ 2017 April:Held a meeting with Nagoya TV to discuss joint-production
->Obtained agreement on Korea-Japan joint production, plans for investment and distribution in Japan under review
->Reasons for choosing Nagoya
①Along with Tokyo and Osaka, the city has film production infrastructure
②The city is familiar to Koreans, it is the location of Shinhan Bank’s Japanese HQ, and many Korean-Japanese and Koreans live there
③The city is the home to Nagoya Castle that holds historical significance
Such elements gives the city diverse and unique color that matches the atmosphere of the movie.

PRODUCTION SCHEDULE (PRELIMINARY)

The movie <Memories of a Dead End> is based on Japanese writer Yoshimoto Banana’s essay <Memories of a Dead End> published in June 2006.
<Memories of a Dead End>, which Yoshimoto Banana has said is one of her favorite works, consists of stories of five women who are faced with critical choices.
The book was published in Korea in 2012.
