Local Films Expected to Recover from the Long Slump

Crime drama The Classified File marked the highest opening score for all local films released this year.

The KWAK Kyung-taek film opened last Thursday (June 18) and amassed $1.25 million from 181,739 admissions on the opening day alone, beating all earlier local titles’ opening scores this year: Gangnam Blues (152,571 admissions); Detective K: The Secret of the Lost Island (113,443); Twenty (151,161); The Treacherous (83,605); and The Chronicles of Evil (114,544). The Classified File has since Thursday amassed $8.56 million from 1.16 million admissions.

The director’s previous release Friend: The Great Legacy scored $9.33 million from 1.37 admissions in the first week and grossed a total of $19.81 during the theatrical run in 2013. 2005’s Typhoon, which earned $20.18 million, is currently KWAK’s highest-grossing film.

Opening on the same day, another local newcomer The Silenced landed in third spot, amassing $1.83 million over four days. Though far weaker than The Classified File the mystery drama set under Japanese occupation has already exceeded director LEE Hae-young’s previous title Foxy Festival which managed $1.38 million in 2010.

Three big local titles Minority Opinion, Intimate Enemies and Northern Limit Line are set to hit cinemas this week.
